We have a variety of venues available for you to experience your Instructor Course. All these venues have been operating for years in South Africa. The dive centers will allow for optimal teaching conditions with areas dedicated to classroom sessions, practical training workshops, on-site training pool and of course space to chill out and relax after a dive! Professional PADI programs are conducted with the latest up to date materials, digital products and interactive teaching aids. We are equipped with all the required materials needed for conducting Divemaster training, IDC presentations and workshops.

2023 PADI Instructor development

How it works

The Instructor Development Course (IDC) is made up of two parts – the Assistant Instructor (AI) course and the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program. Most dive professionals complete the entire IDC and go on to attend an Instructor Examination (IE), which is the final step to earn a PADI Instructor certification.

Successfully completing just the AI course results in a PADI Assistant Instructor qualification.

When an AI is ready to progress, attending an OWSI program allows entry into an IE to earn a full PADI Instructor rating.

Prerequisites

To enroll you need:

Be a certified PADI Divemaster or Assistant Instructor with current membership of PADI, or an
equivalent leadership level certification with another training organization
Have medical clearance of fitness to dive, signed by a doctor within the past 12 months
Hold an EFR certification or other first aid and CPR training current within the last 24 months
Obtain Emergency First Response Instructor Rating
Have been certified as an Open Water Diver or equivalent for a minimum of 6 months
Be at least 18 years old at the start of the course.
To attend an IE you must also show that you have logged a minimum of 100 dives and have successfully completed an IDC.
In date diving medical (12 months)
All non-PADI certification cards or certificates

What you need:

Preparation

Fins, mask, snorkel and appropriate exposure protection
Cylinder and weight system
Regulator with alternate air source and SPG
Depth gauge
Timing device
Compass and knife/divers tool
2 Emergency signaling devices
All of the above equipment is for sale at a discounted rate to students from their dive centre.

We do offer preparation days ahead of the IDC but by preparing yourself thoroughly in advance, you will get more out of your IDC training and avoid feeling overloaded. To prepare independently we recommend that you:

Purchase all required online PADI materials.
Review your PADI Instructor Manual and the Guide to Teaching.
Study the five dive theory topics, Physics, Physiology, Equipment, Dive Skills and the
Environment, Recreational Dive Planner.
Make sure you have the latest version of the PADI Instructor Manual or update yours with the latest Training Bulletins
Review the 24 skills you practiced during your PADI Divemaster course
Practice Rescue exercise 7; ‘Unconscious Diver at the Surface’ exercise from your PADI Rescue Diver course.

Course Content

Open Water Scuba Instructor Program (OWSI)

Duration: 11 Days

Combination of lecture sessions, workshops, pool sessions & open water dives. Candidates will learn about or review PADI’s educational approach, materials and philosophy, then work on adapting their instructional skills to conduct PADI courses. The course prepares these candidates to effectively function as PADI Instructors, while giving them the background they need to prepare for the IE.

Emergency First Response Instructor Course:

Duration: 2-3 Days

Classroom Sessions and Practical Teaching Assignments * This is a mandatory course to qualify as an Open Water Scuba Instructor. This course provides the training required to teach the Emergency First Response Primary Care (CPR), Secondary Care (First Aid) and Care for Children Courses.

Instructor Exam:

Duration: 2 Days

PADI is the only dive training agency that requires Instructors to pass an objective, independent, examination. It is a balanced and consistent evaluation process to ensure that all standards and requirements are met. It is a combination of Theoretical Exams, Pool Evaluation, Academic Presentations and Open Water Evaluations.

Please Note:

You can enroll immediately and start your IDC online course long before you start with the practical workshops.
To start you need to complete your enrolment, we will send you an invoice for the package you chose.
A deposit of R10000 is required to receive your course material and secure your spot on the program.
Once your course material has been allocated we will arrange an online meeting as an orientation to what you need to start doing and a more detailed explanation of the course schedule and requirements.
Depending on which venue we will arrange and introduce you to the dive center to arrange accommodation and any gear requirements.
IDC Schedules will be honored but Instructor Exams are determined by PADI based on enough candidates enrolling (at least 4).
